Intralipid Infusion 20% (100ml) is an intravenous (IV) fat emulsion used to provide essential fatty acids and calories for patients who require parenteral nutrition (nutrition through IV). It is commonly used in hospital settings for patients who cannot eat or absorb nutrients normally.

Composition:

  • Soybean Oil (20%) œ Source of essential fatty acids.
  • Egg Phospholipids œ Helps in emulsification and absorption.
  • Glycerol œ Provides energy and maintains osmotic balance.
  • Water for Injection œ Carrier medium for safe IV administration.

Uses:

Nutritional support for critically ill patients.
Provides essential fatty acids to prevent deficiencies.
Used in total parenteral nutrition (TPN) when oral/enteral feeding is not possible.
Energy source for patients with high caloric needs (burn victims, post-surgery, malnourished patients).

Administration:

  • Given as an IV infusion under medical supervision.
  • Dosage depends on patient condition, weight, and nutritional requirements.
  • Usually administered as part of a total parenteral nutrition (TPN) regimen.

Side Effects (Rare but Possible):

  • Allergic reactions (rash, fever, chills)
  • Liver dysfunction (if used long-term)
  • Fat overload syndrome (nausea, dizziness, organ issues in rare cases)
  • Elevated triglyceride levels

Precautions:

  • Not for patients with egg or soybean allergies.
