Istavel 50mg Tablets contain sitagliptin, a prescription oral anti-diabetic medicine that belongs to the class of drugs known as DPP-4 inhibitors (dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors). It is specifically used to help manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, particularly when healthy eating and regular exercise alone are not enough to achieve adequate control.

Sitagliptin works by enhancing the levels of naturally occurring incretin hormones in the body. These hormones play an important role in regulating glucose balance — they increase insulin release from the pancreas in response to meals and simultaneously reduce glucose production by the liver. This combined effect helps lower both fasting (before meals) and postprandial (after meals) blood sugar levels, without usually causing hypoglycemia when used alone.
